When a .wtf domain makes a brand more memorable, when it can hurt trust, and what to check before choosing one over .com, .fun, or .lol.
.SI Domain for Super Intelligence: What It Is and How to Register
Written by Steven White ·
A .si domain is the country-code extension of Slovenia, run by the Slovenian registry ARNES since 1992, and anyone in the world can register one — no local address or company is needed. Since September 2026 it is also being bought as shorthand for “super intelligence” (SI), after the US President proposed the term and then told federal agencies to use it instead of “AI”: the registry counted 46,066 new .si names in September 2026, against 3,515 in the whole of August. A .si works as a short brand name or a defensive registration, but Google still reads it as a signal for Slovenia, which it does not do with .ai. You can check availability and register on our .SI domain page.
Registry rules checked against the register.si General Terms and Conditions on 2 October 2026. Registration figures are dated and sourced below; they change daily during a rush like this one. Prices change too, so this page does not list them — the .SI page always shows the current one.
What happened to .si in September 2026
This section is the news, frozen at 2 October 2026. Everything after it is the part that does not expire: what a .si is, how it compares with .ai, and how to register one safely.
- 22 September 2026. Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Donald Trump said the word “artificial” makes intelligence “sound fake” and closed with: “welcome to the new world of super intelligence — SI” (Foreign Policy, 28 September 2026).
- 23 September 2026. 3,234 .si domains were registered in a single day, about 32 times a normal day of roughly 100 (Domgate, 29 September 2026).
- 19–28 September 2026. 17,621 new .si domains against 7,209 new .ai domains in the same period (Domgate, 29 September 2026).
- 29 September 2026. An executive order titled Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence directed US executive departments and agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in official communications, websites, reports and policy documents, “to the maximum extent permitted by law” (whitehouse.gov).
- 30 September 2026. The registry recorded about 11,000 new .si addresses in one day (TechCrunch, 2 October 2026).
- 2 October 2026. 258,880 .si domains registered in total, 46,066 of them added the previous month, through 92 accredited registrars (register.si).
Two numbers that put it in proportion
- The trend started before the speech. The zone had about 186,000 names in June 2026, and in May 2026 the name recursive.si changed hands for US$20,000 on the aftermarket, one of the largest .si sales recorded (NameBio, 23 May 2026). ARNES itself warned: “We would, however, be careful about attributing the entire increase to President Trump’s comments” (spokesperson Klara Herman, Foreign Policy, 28 September 2026).
- Most of the new names are not about AI. At Hostinger, more than half of the .si buyers during the peak were from the US and India, and only about 3% of the names were explicitly AI-related (TechCrunch, 2 October 2026).
The registry said that “despite the greatly increased number of requests to all Registry systems, all services are operating smoothly”, and advised trademark owners to register their .si name early (Reuters/DPA via The Star, 1 October 2026).
.si vs .ai at a glance
.ai is the extension the AI industry already uses; .si is the newcomer to that conversation. They are both country codes and both open to foreigners, but they are not interchangeable.
| .si | .ai | |
|---|---|---|
| Country | Slovenia | Anguilla |
| Local presence required | No — any person or company, any country | No |
| Registered names | 258,880 (register.si, 2 Oct 2026) | About 1.5 million (DomainNameStat, Oct 2026) |
| Relative cost | A fraction of .ai | Several times .si (Domgate, Sept 2026) |
| Registration term | 1 to 5 years | Minimum 2 years at Register.Domains, up to 10 |
| Domain disputes | ARDS, register.si’s own procedure (not UDRP) | UDRP, with WIPO as provider |
| How Google treats it | Country signal for Slovenia | Generic, like a .com (on Google’s list of generic country codes) |
Current prices for both are on their own pages, .SI and .AI, and for every country code on our ccTLD price list. If you are weighing .ai on its own merits, we cover it in Should I buy a .ai domain?
The .si registry rules that matter
These come from the register.si General Terms and Conditions, the contract every .si holder accepts through their registrar.
| Rule | What it says | Clause |
|---|---|---|
| Who can hold one | Any natural or legal person; no nationality or residency condition | 2.7 |
| Length | 2 to 63 characters (for accented names, the 63 count applies to the encoded form) | 4.1, 4.2 |
| Characters | Letters a–z, digits 0–9, the hyphen, and the accented letters on the registry’s list (for example roža.si) | 2.1, 2.3 |
| Hyphens | Not first or last; no double hyphen in positions 3 and 4 | 4.3, 4.4 |
| Term | 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 years, renewable | 5.1.1 |
| Not renewed | Quarantine of up to 30 days, then deleted | 5.4 |
| Contact e-mail | Must be valid, and the holder must have exclusive and direct access to it; data must stay accurate and current | 8.1.1, 8.1.2 |
| If you break those obligations | The registry may delete the domain on its own initiative | 8.2 |
| Disputes | ARDS: a name identical or confusingly similar to a trademark, company name or geographic name, held without legitimate interest and in bad faith, can be transferred or deleted | 18 |
| DNSSEC | Supported | Registry policy |
At Register.Domains a .si is usually registered within a few minutes, and it comes with free DNS management, e-mail forwarding and web redirection. Transfers in are supported. Because there is no local-presence rule, no trustee service is needed — unlike the countries in our local presence requirements list.
Who should register a .si domain
- AI and research teams that want a short matching name — yourname.si reads naturally next to “super intelligence”, and the zone is still far less crowded than .ai.
- Brands protecting their name. If a copycat registering yourbrand.si would hurt you, registering it yourself is simpler than recovering it later through a dispute. The registry itself has advised trademark owners to do this.
- Businesses selling in Slovenia. This is what .si was built for, and the one case where Google’s country signal works in your favour.
Who should think twice: anyone planning to make a .si their only address for a global audience, and anyone buying purely to resell. The second group is already large, as the next section shows.
Risks to check before you buy
- Your brand name may already be taken — and listed for sale. Domgate reported that about half of the .si names registered through one large US registrar were put up for resale within days (29 September 2026). Check now; if it is gone, our guide on what to do when a domain name is taken covers the options, including the ARDS dispute route if the holder is using your trademark in bad faith.
- Impersonation is already happening. Since 19 September 2026, Netcraft counted 37 new .si domains containing “bank”, 119 containing “pay” and 16 containing “gov” (via Domgate, 29 September 2026). If you run a bank, a payment service or a public body, register the obvious variants of your name and monitor the zone. If you receive a link to a .si site asking for a login or a payment, treat it as you would any unknown domain.
- Google reads .si as Slovenia. Google keeps a short list of country codes it treats as generic — .ai, .io, .co and .tv are on it, .si is not (Google Search Central, updated December 2025). A site on .si can still rank elsewhere, but it starts with a signal pointing at Slovenia. For a global product, the safer setup is to keep your main site on .com or .ai and point the .si at it.
- A dead e-mail address can cost you the domain. The registry requires a working contact e-mail that you control, and may delete the domain if you do not meet that obligation (clauses 8.1.2 and 8.2). Use an address that will outlive the person who registered the name — not a personal inbox.
- “SI” is official vocabulary in one place only. The executive order binds US executive departments and agencies. It does not change existing law, and it does not bind companies, other governments, search engines or registries. Whether the wider industry adopts “SI” is still open, which is a reason to register a .si as an addition to your main domain rather than a replacement.
How to register a .si domain
- Search the name on our .SI domain page. If it is taken, the .SI WHOIS lookup shows its status.
- Check the rules above: 2 to 63 characters, no hyphen at the start or end.
- Choose a term of 1 to 5 years. A longer term protects a brand registration from a missed renewal.
- Enter a contact e-mail you control long term — it is a registry obligation, not a formality.
- Point it where you want: use the free DNS, or redirect it to your main site in a few clicks.
FAQs
Can I register a .si domain if I do not live in Slovenia?
Yes. The registry has no nationality or residency rule: any person or company can hold a .si, and no trustee or local contact is needed.
Is .si going to replace .ai?
Nothing suggests that yet. .ai has about 1.5 million names and is treated by Google as a generic domain; .si has about 259,000 and is treated as Slovenian.
Why is it called “super intelligence”?
Because the US President proposed the term at the UN on 22 September 2026, saying “artificial” makes the technology sound fake, and on 29 September 2026 ordered US federal agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” instead of “AI”. .si is simply the domain that spells it.
How long does a .si registration last?
Between 1 and 5 years, and it can be renewed. If it is not renewed it goes into quarantine for up to 30 days and is then deleted.
What happens if someone registers my trademark as a .si?
.si disputes go through ARDS, the registry’s own procedure, not the UDRP used by .com or .ai. If the name is identical or confusingly similar to your trademark and was registered and used in bad faith, it can be transferred to you or deleted.
Register your .si while the name is still free. Search it on the .SI domain page, where the current price and renewal are shown, or compare it with other country codes on the ccTLD price list.
