WHOIS Domain Lookup: A Comprehensive Guide
WHOIS Domain Lookup: A Comprehensive Guide

Comprehensive guide on WHOIS domain lookup – learn what WHOIS is, how it works, free lookup tools, WHOIS API integration, privacy and legal issues, and advanced WHOIS techniques.

Where WHOIS privacy is available, where it is not, and why
Where WHOIS privacy is available, where it is not, and why

WHOIS privacy is not available on every extension. Of the 1,175 extensions we sell, it can be added to 617 and cannot be added to 558 - almost every European country domain among them, usually because the registry already withholds personal data by default. This guide lists both groups, explains the three reasons an extension has no privacy service, and says plainly what privacy hides and what it does not.

Private vs public domain: the difference, in plain terms
Private vs public domain: the difference, in plain terms

The only thing that changes between a private and a public domain registration is what a WHOIS lookup shows. Public publishes your real name, email, address and phone number; private substitutes the registrar's proxy contact details while mail and legal notices still reach you. Ownership, control and search rankings are identical either way. Whether privacy is available on your extension is a separate question, answered in our guide by extension.
