Man Makes Five-Figure Profit on HarrisWalz.com Domain Name

Man Makes Five-Figure Profit on HarrisWalz.com Domain Name

The idea of buying and selling domain names is almost as old as the internet itself. Modern history is littered with examples of people investing in domains or snapping up appealing web addresses for tiny fees, then selling them for much more.

The latest of these domain investment success stories centers around a politically-minded New York attorney who had the smarts and foresight to invest in one particular domain name that just landed him a five-figure payout.

A Very Profitable Pastime

Jeremy Green Eche is a New York trademark attorney. In his spare time, he likes buying unclaimed domain names for low prices (focusing specifically on names valued at under $10) in the hopes of selling them someday for a healthy profit or even using them to build his own future businesses.

One of Eche’s favored tricks is to buy domain names that are a mixture of potential presidential candidate surnames, like HarrisWalz.com, in the hopes that those two candidates may eventually run for the White House.

Of course, a lot of these combinations don’t turn into real presidential pairings or party nominees. But now and then, Eche and people like him land on a winning ticket. When Kamala Harris announced Tim Walz as her running mate, Eche’s $8.99 purchase of HarrisWalz.com looked like a shrewd move.

It turned out even better than the attorney might have expected, as he sold the domain for a whopping $15,000. The buyer identified themselves as a Harris supporter, rather than anyone from the official Harris campaign staff, and the domain now links directly to Kamala Harris’ official site.

A History of Success

It’s easy to assume that Eche got really lucky with his HarrisWalz.com buy. But this wasn’t the first time he’d successfully picked a domain name for a presidential candidate and their running mate. Before the 2016 election, he bought Clintonkaine.com and also sold that one for $15k.

Indeed, Eche even calls himself the “GOAT” (Greatest of All Time) in his particular niche of so-called cybersquatting for political domain names. However, as more people learn about his story, it’s possible he’ll have more competition to cope with when the next election cycle rolls around.

But Eche is already prepared for all of that. He has a whole bank of domain names locked in and ready to go for future elections, including 10 domains involving Gretchen Whitmer, the governor of Michigan, along with some in case Tim Walz someday runs for the highest office and not just the Vice President position.

The Exciting and Potentially Lucrative World of Domain Investments

As touched on earlier, Eche’s story is only one of many examples of savvy investors making serious money through domain name buying and selling. Some people and businesses have made much more than $15k through their sales, far exceeding Eche’s profits.

For those who are interested, there are lots of online resources and guides to help you get into domain name investments. There are also a lot of different strategies or types of investments to pursue, including flipping, holding, and following the trends.

  • Flipping: This method involves rapidly buying and selling domain names over a short-term period, possibly of just a few months or up to a year. It demands a lot of skill and strong knowledge of the domain name markets to make the right moves.
  • Holding: With holding, investors buy domain names with the intent of holding onto them for several years, until the right moment or buyer arrives. This is, effectively, what Eche does by buying political names several years in advance of elections and then selling them later on.
  • Trends: With trending investments, it’s all about latching onto the latest trends. Right now, for example, AI is all the rage, and lots of people are buying and selling domain names that use the .ai country-code extension at the end.

The Future of Domain Name Investing

Looking forward, the future remains bright for domain name investors. Literally hundreds of thousands of new websites are created daily, opening up so many opportunities for investors to buy and sell names to businesses or individuals that want them.

The rise of new generic TLDs and the evolution of ccTLDs (like .ai and .io) opens up new investment opportunities, as well, but investors have to act fast and register names quickly to avoid missing out on those that have the most value.
